Beers

Aww. I read about a coolest beers list (via slashfood) and I think of Leon. Dude, I miss you. Please come home already! This list had a bunch of wheat beers and belgian style ales.
Phew, I made it.

Baby, it was in the stars for me last night. Last minute-style, I came across an extra ticket yesterday and I was able to find a co-worker who really, really wanted to go to the show last night. So off we were. We arrived just before Dungen (dune-yen!) set up. They were great. Only 4 guys, but fully capable of reproducing the hefty psych of their newer CD. My only complaint is that they played their "hit" second and ended in a boring psych-freak out.

Go! Team was next. Dungen wore me out, or maybe it was just the contact high I got. So I started getting pretty tired. I even fell asleep on my feet a couple of times, just like a cow. About mid-set, we went to check out the upstairs and look for seats. I really like Great American Music hall as a venue. Luckily the balcony behind the sound guy was pretty vacant, so we cozied up to a table and couple of chairs. Go! Team was so great. I was expecting 16 people on stage, but they only had 6, which included 2 drummers who played simultaneous beats. The singer was amazing. She rapped old-school style, she cheered, she sang. She also danced up a storm in her little yellow cheerleader skirt. During the encore, she busted out all these crazy dance moves: high kicks, some riverdance shit and then she did the running man! I was completely floored.

I was dead tired when I got home. Thank goodness my co-worker was there to help keep me awake the whole drive back.

Go! Team / Dungen

I'm off to see Go! Team & Dungen tonight in SF. I only got one ticket and couldn't find anyone that's going this late so looks like I'm driving to the city and back alone. Here's to not falling asleep on the way back. Zzzzz.....

Leon's Berlin report

So last night for dinner I had pizza spinaci, which was pizza with
Gorgonzola and spinach. It was OK, and instead of slices, it was cut
into squares and eaten with a fork.

People like to drink beer outdoors here in Berlin, and bier is cheap,
but all the German bier I've had so far has been pretty boring, but
it's pretty much all lager, so you might like some of it. I mainly
like it because it's always served in a super huge glass (1 liter).

There are a lot of bad 80's American sit coms on TV (Alf, Erkel,
etc...) Alf's voice in Germany sounds more like an old Russian
dude...pretty funny I watched an episode of mythbusters dubbed in
German. They are into horrible pop music from the US and Germany
(judging by the top ten video count down I watched). American Idol is
called "Deutschland Superstar", but I havent seen it.

Okay, I'll let him tell his own story when he gets back. I'm just too busy to post anything else today. That and I didn't do much yesterday except walk the dog, fend off a dude trying to get me to "hollaback" and waking up at 3am terrified of the noises the ice maker was making.

In case you haven't had enough peep dog

Here's another picture of Heylove at this year's peep off. I am not sure who took it, but I think it was a goth girl I've never met.
Brisket in a peep suit

Amy P., MD posted her peep off pictures to her flickr account. She took a couple of really cute ones of my brisket here in her peep suit.

And this one, too:

Anyway. Not much else to say today as my editors are keeping me more mum than usual.

Season of the Peep

Sunday's Peep Off was fun. The weather was perfect and the only rain was a fine spray of colored sugar as peeps were tossed around. I got hit in the face just once, which sounds brutal but is much better than some people got. Heylove wore her Peep costume again but she barely fits it anymore. She did okay until it was right around her nap time, then she got fiesty and bit some hands. At least no one bled. I had to put her in the car for a time out. She slept for about 40 minutes before I woke her up again to come out. She was in a much better mood after that. Funny how dogs are kind of like kids that way. Though you can't really put a kid in a car by itself for 40 minutes while you party with your friends across the street. From what I hear, that's sort of frowned upon.

Earlier Sunday I saw Leon off to Berlin. He'll be gone for a week, so it's just me and the dog. The house will be much easier to clean without hurricane Leon wreaking havoc on a daily basis, but I'll be lonely.

Oh, Tony!

I found this via Slashfood: Anthony Bourdain's Rhapsody playlist!

Bobby Womack, David Bowie, Bill Withers (best song!) and Marvin Gaye! Could I love you anymore? Oh wait, Porno For Pyros?! Tony, how could you?

'ello sunshine!

This weather wants me to eat hotdogs, potato chips and wear flip flops. I made a nice smart dog the other night with fresh carrot relish. I love this stuff, I got the recipe from Vegetarian Times.

1 Tbs. vegetable oil
1 Tbs. white-wine vinegar
2 tsp. Dijon mustard
1 tsp. granulated sugar
Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1 bunch peeled carrots (about 3/4 lb.)

Whisk together all ingredients except carrots. Grate carrots using fine shredding disk of food processor (I use a food processor, but I bet a blender would work) or hand grater. Stir into mixture, and toss well; drain excess liquid.

I was on a roll that night, so I also made croutons with a recipe that is completely boring, but totally easy. Then I took half the croutons and made bread crumbs for stuffed pesto mushrooms that I whipped up last night. I've been cooking up a storm lately. I think we ate out too much last week.

I'm in the Bee today

Heyamoto wrote about designer jeans falling apart and I'm quoted in this article.
Big Sur

We went to Big Sur and it was gorgeous. Sure it rained a lot, but we were able to get out for sightseeing and hiking in the breaks when it didn't rain too much.

Like going to the aquarium in Monterey.

Taking the 17 mile drive.

Posing for goofy pictures.

We ate at a great italian restaurant in Carmel, that unfortunately had some service problems.

We saw the most beautiful parts of the California coast that exist.

The sun made a brief appearance, so we went to watch it set at this beach.

And at night we retired to this cute little cabin.

Nature

Nature

Big Sur could easily be the most beautiful part of California that I've ever seen. More on our trip later. I've still got 93 unread emails and at least 7 unheard voicemails.

Leon, a king among husbands

It's our anniversary weekend so we're going to go do something fun for a change. Brisket went to stay with her me-maw and chihuahua cousin. I've got a half day off here at work, which is not much time to get anything done at all.

Last night we were feeling especially brave so we did our taxes finally. All I can say is that I am so mad at the State.

Welcome to sleepyland

I haven't been sleeping well lately so in my waking hours I am dead tired. Maybe it's work, maybe it's the drama with the water damage, maybe it's any number of things. All I know is that I am ready to fall fast asleep right now. I wish I were home instead.
More about food

I'm often found impersonating a foodie. I recently stumbled upon Slashfood, a blog about food and food. Oh, and more food. There's a great, simple recipe for roasted new potatoes on today. Oh man, I'm so hungry. Does this qualify as food porn?
New favorite show

I'm currently obsessed with Anthony Bourdain No Reservations on the Travel Channel. He goes everywhere, he eats everything, he has a great, cynical sense of humor and he's actually a little foxy, too.

We have the damp

In the misty UK, they call it "damp." Here, we call it something like "water seeping into your house." Whatever it is, it causes water damage.

Because we are naive, new homeowners, we have not previously seen the importance of installing rain gutters on hour house. Now we know that rain gutters keep a lot of water away from the sides and base of your house. Since we don't have any, the rain is coming down onto the back deck on either side of the french doors and it's staying there, seeping into the house siding and into the house itself. Our baseboards inside are swollen with water and the carpet is soaked, turning black with mold. It's kind of freaky. I wake up with a stuffy nose and wonder if it's because I'm coming down with something or if it's the fungus growing under the carpet. Heylove in her best Lassie impression scratched away all the house paint where the water was coming in to show us the clapboards covered in black mold.

It makes me wish that this rain would stop so we can do something about it. It also makes me wish we could just call the landlord and say, "hey dude, fix your house." But we can't. We're responsible for this mess. We haven't gotten anyone to look at it yet, but I know it's going to be a very expensive mistake we made.

This says more than I can

I can't say much about all the immigration policy-reform talk going on in the media. I am far too attached to it all. Reading the paper this morning about all the marches and rallies going on across the nation had me in tears. Although this has lots to do with other ethnic groups, the ones with roots in spanish-speaking countries are turning out in droves. My people are a passionate lot. Haven't you ever flipped past a novela on Univision? You can't shake them up and expect them to not react.

There are tons of photo pools on flickr. I looked at a few pictures but want to go through more at home tonight.
Hoot!

A bunch of us went to Hooters last night to celebrate spring break. Of course it was loud, garish and scantily clad, but the food I ordered was not as terrible as I was expecting. I got the grilled cheese platter for $5.99. It came on Texas toast with 2 kinds of cheese, expertly grilled and a whole mess of curly fries. It was pretty good, actually. Two complaints though:

1. The curly fries were not seasoned curly fries.
2. It was Hooters.
Ikea: Spring Break Edition

I planned a lunchtime trip to Ikea yesterday. I'm thinking Monday afternoon....no crowds...pretty cheap and tasty vittles. Wrong! It's spring break, dude! Everyone and their mother was there. And when I say "everyone and their mother," I mean tons of little kids and their mothers were there. They were all in line to get food in the cafeteria, too. That line was at least 100 people long. I ended up buying a couple of things and then hit Taco Bell on the way back to the office. Note to blog: do not go to Ikea on the weekends, do not go to Ikea during any holiday or spring break.

Hounds of love

Heylove wants me to get this book because she heard about it on Fresh Air yesterday. I listened to a rebroadcast of the program, and the little ribs is right, this book is totally up my alley. Reminds me of the two sweet pit mixes I used to have and the other ones we saved.

Here's an excerpt from one rescue story about a rowdy looking pit:
"He [the pitbull] settled into the passenger's seat, and I pulled onto the highway, talking to him the entire time. After a few minutes he began leaning toward me. Then he put a paw on my lap. Next he was sitting on top of me, turning to face me, and settling down with his back to the road, his face staring directly into mine.

"What are you doing?" I asked, nervous, a little, to find out. I didn't think he would attack me, but we were in a closed-in space, on the road -- not a place to find out. Out came his tongue, and the kisses began. Now I was laughing, and still unable to see where I was going.

Sweet dog!
I got my wings

I got an Amazon GC for my birthday (thanks M&J!), but it took forever to decide what I wanted to get. So I got this necklace and something boring that I needed.

Yesterday after work, I was starving so Leon suggested we go out and grab a bite at the new Opa! Opa! I'm a falafel lover and I heard they had it, so we went to eat what we could eat. Okay, so this place gets a total thumbs down on falafel. I couldn't even finish it. I ordered a falafel pita and a side of some kind of greeky salad. The small side salad conisted of old tomatoes, red onions, slimy cukes, 3 kalamata olives and a dalop of feta cheese on top. It would have been good if it were fresh, but it tasted like it had been sitting in a prep tub for more than 24 hours. The falafel was not much better. About 4 discs of rubbery falafel sat in a greasy pita with tahini, romaine lettuce, 2 roma tomato slices and 2 pickle chips. There seemed to be some kind of hot sauce at one end of my pita, too. While these are all things I'm accustomed to having in my falafel sandwiches, the falafel itself as so weak that it ruined the whole experience. It just tasted stale and old. The texture was kind of rubbery and cold. I left the meal feeling so unsatisfied. Leon had the same thing more or less. We paid about $22 to hate this meal. I feel so ripped off.

Everybody loves the sunshine

My editors have me on a tight leash today, so I can't say much except that I'm dissappointed with last night's Lost episode. I also had a huge fight with my Tivo because it did not record the first 48 minutes of Top Model. Now I'll just talk about the weather.

It was sunny out this morning for a change, but all the rain is coming back soon. I just want it get dry enough so that Leon can cut the lawns. Our house has the worst lawn on the block right now. I also want to be able to get the front gardening in order, which we can't really do until the weather gets better. All this rain is nice for nature and stuff, but it's more than I'm used to and it's starting to cramp my style. Sorry, nature.

Wednesdays own me

I am not ashamed to be so in love with a certain number of television programs. Wednesdays, I belong to Lost, American Idol and America's Next Top Model. I already know what's going to happen on Lost (thanks to my spoiler message board, hey...that's how I roll). But no spoilers were to be found on the othet two shows. I'm predicting that Ace Young will have a bad day on Idol, and I'm going to guess that either Joanie or Furonda are out of the running to become America's...next...top...model.

Comedy club

I went to a comedy club to see some wise guys. I wouldn't have gone, except it was for a birthday and I'm obliged to do what people want to do on their birthdays. Here's the thing: I have a fear that if I go to a comedy club, I will be singled out and picked on. You know how comics like to bust snaps on people? I don't want that to be me, so I just don't take the risk. Leon reassured me that the comics only bust on people who heckle them, and I'm not much of a heckler so I have nothing to worry about, right? But like I said, this was for a birthday, so I went. We were thankfully seated in the back. And the comics, they had no discretion! They picked on anyone! Non-hecklers and hecklers alike. I was lucky that they didn't pick on me, but I was sweating it the whole time. Plus, there were a bunch of unfunny racist jokes. I was so glad to get out of there.
Cooking with Teeni

Saturday we went out to Whole Foods for this and that, but mostly for free cheese and olive samples. While we were there, I decided to pick up some soyrizo that my tia recently recommended. Sunday morning I fryed it up with some breakfast potatoes and shallots (I would have used yellow onion, but this was all I had). Delish! One word of warning for this stuff, the casing is plastic! Don't try to cook up the whole thing mash & fry style, like real sausage. Remove the plastic casing first and squeeze out like toothpaste.

Breakfast potatoes

Get a bag of small yellow dutch potatoes from TJ's
Grab a shallot or a 1/4 cup yellow onion
Snip off half of the Soyrizo and freeze the other half for next weekend

Wash the potatoes, cut them into quarters, then parboil them in salted water for about 8 minutes.

Prep your onions and Soyrizo.

Get out a large skillet and add about 1.5 tbs oil on med-high heat.

Strain the parboiled potatoes and add to the skillet. Salt and pepper generously and let them slightly brown. Once you get that going, add in the shallots or onions and get those to start cooking a little.

Finally, add in the Soyrizo and mix it up really well. Keep stirring it up and try to get the Soyrizo to look a little like ground beef.

That's about when it's done, so grab a plate and dig in.
Brisket gets a bath

I couldn't resist taking this picture of Heylove because she looked so upset. She hates baths. She was such a filthy beast we had to hose her down, whether she liked it or not. There's no ammount of liver treats in the world that can make a bath better for her.
Grilled Cheese!

I would like to give a shout out to the finest grilled cheese sandwich in Sacramento, which can be had at Nationwide Freezer Meats. I had a hankering for a grilled cheese on Saturday, so that's where we ended up for munch. Check out this beauty. So perfect you want to buy an extra one and put it between the pages in a dictionary under "grilled cheese."
