Happy holidays

My peeps

Fun times and mega baby specialness abound at the Neons today. I'm still kind of recovering from the tamales I ate this afternoon. I hate to admit it, but I think this year's batch was made with different, inferior masa. They're still good though, I just got a little bit...windy. Well, it also could have been the 40 or so cookies I ate over the last 24 hours. One of the best things I heard today was my sister trying to explain egg nog to my 7 year old niece. She said, "It's like christmas milk." I don't know. I guess I thought that was a really simple explaination for a kid. Later when I made a bottle of breastmilk for Ira, I was tempted to write "egg nog" on the lid before storing it, instead of 12/25/06.

The season of the tamal

One thing I love about my family is the annual tradition of tamal making on Christmas Eve. It's a little bit of work (that's why we only make them for Christmas or weddings), but a lot of talking, snacking and catching up. Every year we go to a relative's house and spread masa onto hojas. Someone else stuffs them with pork and sauce, or chile and cheese. Then they're set into a pot for steaming on Christmas. I'm going to make Ira a little tiny one. He won't be able to eat it, so I'll eat it in his honor.

Woo! Tonight I'm getting out. It's time for the fun christmas party. My sister is coming over to watch the brat so I can have a beer with friends and not talk about cloth diapers, poop, breastfeeding or sleeping schedules. That's what all my lousy support groups are for. Well, they're not really lousy. In fact, it's pretty reassuring to sit with other ladies once a week and talk about boobs and milk and have everyone completely interested.

Ira is doing pretty good. He's starting to get a lot heavier. He must be up to about 10 pounds now. All I know is that it's murder on my wrist and elbow joints. Leon thinks I have arthritis. I thought it was carpal tunnel, but the symptoms don't match up. Mang, I'm so sore. I have some mega-ibuprofen pills left over from the birth. I might pop a couple to kick this ache down a couple of points. I thought arthritis was an old people's condition. Does this mean I'm old, or was I just wrong about that?

Chappy Chanukkah!

Leon made us latkes for breakfast on Sunday from grandma Manichevitz's special recipe. Yum!! Well, that's the most Jewish thing we did for the holiday so far. We have two menorahs, but no candles to light them with. Where the heck do you get candles this late anyway? Sometimes I have a hard time finding them at all. Maybe Wishing Well has them again this year. Oh, but to take a quick trip to pick some up! Quick trips are not an option for me as long as I've got babe in arms, in car seat, in stroller. Remind me why again it's frowned upon to leave Ira in the crate with Heylove while I go run errands? She's a smart dog and if she can be trained to give a high-five, babysitting is not that far off.

Just look at this riblet.

She'd take good care of him, don't you think?

Baby puke

Is this a cute smile or what? Hmmm, I'm saying it's a "what" because this is the face he often makes right before he pukes. You know what though? Babies are awesome pukers. The kind of people you want to be around after they puke. They're not like the annoying drunk chicks that spill out of 2-Me at 1:45 am, screaming "Jenny...hold my hair back! Bleeechhhh!" Then they ask you if you think they're pretty. Boring! After babies puke, they're cheerful and ready to move on. "Hey mom. What's next? Another round of this little piggy? Whoa. Is that my HAND?!"

All the love

It's not all missed meals and sleep. Baby Ira is total precious times, too. This weekend, the kid has started smiling at us! I know, big milestone. Well, it is! Instead of paychecks, this job as mom pays me in cute things like this. Week of no sleep? He smiles and it's like I slept 8 hours. It makes it all worth it. So far the smiles are pretty unpredictable. I can't figure out what's funny to him. Last night it was his aunt's super high-pitched baby talk voice. This morning it was Leon's Superbowl Shuffle rap. And this afternoon he did it while he was nursing. I'm so excited about this smiling thing, I'll be spending all this week trying to earn more of them. I better learn that Superbowl rap.
