What's new

boo!

Baby:
Ira is saying more words lately. Well, they don't always sound like the words they're supposed to be, but I understand the intent. He can say duck, but it sounds like "uck." The same goes for truck. He also loves to point out balls every where. Any place he sees a round, orb shape, he exclaims "ba!" It's pretty cute. He's also been saying hot and waving his hand around when he goes near the stove or heater. "Ott! Ott!" And bubble. He loves bubbles. He waves his hands in front of him, which is kind of close to the baby sign for bubbles, and says "buh!" He thinks it's hilarious when I try to bite the bubbles as they float by our faces. And of course there's still his favorite word, dada. Every morning when he wakes up, he says "dada!" He still only says mama when he cries. Let's see. After all those new words, he's walking a lot better and loves playing pretend. Any spatula or oblong object becomes Ira's guitar. He'll pick it up and strum it, sing a little and then throw his pointer finger in the air and say "bock!" We're pretty sure he's trying to say rock and throw devil's horns. Serious!

Parties:
I'm dead tired. But not all from taking care of Ira. I've been going to holiday parties for the last three weekends in a row. That's a lot for me! Oy, I guess I'm just out of practice. We went to two of these parties without Ira and one with. The one we took Ira to was too stressful with me! I really couldn't enjoy myself and chase a baby around all night. On top of that, the hosts had super gorgeous furniture and decorations; so much of it vintage and no doubt pricey. I let Ira walk around, but had to follow him and quickly baby proof a few things as we went along. I'm sure later as our friends were cleaning up they might have wondered why their remote controls, lighters, bowls of peanuts and car keys were found on higher surfaces than they left them. Also, sorry to the guy who left his spiked egg nog on the floor. I put it by the sink. The last thing I need is a belligerent baby. He already gets pretty fussy.

Food:
I ate. So. Much. Food! But it was all so delicious. Tamales, baked treats, enchiladas, chili, spaghetti, monster quesadillas.

Holiday:
We had christmas eve with my aunt and cousins (tamal making), then ended the night with Leon's family for cocoa and presents. Christmas we spent at my mom and dad's place then went back over to my cousin's again to eat the tamales we made. Ira got a lot of really nice presents. I got a few things to help me work on my fitness. Heylove and the cats got a laser pointer, which they love. The cats chase the little red dot and Heylove chases the cats. I love watching them all scramble for it. It's probably more of a present for me.

See you next year.

Yo Gabba Gabba

Kidrobot Yo Gabba Gabba

This is the best kid show ever! I wish I had the toys for Ira, but they're only made by Kid Robot right now, which means they're probably already sold out, super expensive and for collectors only. Collectors that don't play with toys! Ira freaks out over this show. He dances, he claps, he is rapt with attention. And you know, the music and stories are not bad. I am convinced that it's made for adults keen on design and with an ear for good music. The fact that kids like it and that it airs on Nick Jr. is probably just secondary. Until the real, made-for-kids toys come out, I bought him a shirt with the characters on it for Christmas.

"My name is mommy, and I like to dance!"

Making it up as I go along

At 6:30 AM this morning, as I was washing an "accident" off of Ira in the tub (am I setting my child up to hate me?), I started thinking about this girl I knew in high school. Her mom had parenting books. I thought this was a wild idea. Parenting books?! There's no manual for kids. Even as a bratty teenager, I knew that. We scoffed at the thought of an adult not being able to figure out their own kid and needing a book to even try. We thought her mom inept, clueless. Now, I am that mom! I am constantly searching for that kid manual.

Here's a short list of books I found pretty helpful:

1. The Happiest Baby on the Block by Dr. Harvey Karp
Indispensable advice on how to keep your newborn happy, quell any fussing and all without making them cry it out.

2. Just about anything in the Sears parenting library. The Baby Book by Dr. and Martha Sears covers almost everything you need to know about babies from birth to 2 years. Right now, I'm all over the chapter about picky eaters.

3. Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. Really good information on what to feed babies when they're ready to start solid food. What I loved is that she gives portion sizes on what babies actually might eat. I still turn to this book almost daily. It's rife with typos and I disagree with her giving peanut butter at 12 months. Our pediatrician told us to wait until age 3.

4. Touchpoints by Barry Brazelton. So touchy, so feely! This book proclaims "be proud to love your baby and care about his/her emotional growth. Oh yeah, and when your toddler can't sleep it's probably because he or she is just about to conquer a developmental milestone."

And here's what I'm reading now/read recently:

1. The Happiest Toddler on the Block, also by Dr. Harvey Karp
2. How to Get Your Baby to Sleep by Dr. and Martha Sears
3. The No Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley

So hey, Kelly. I have turned into your mother.

The week in quotes

Leon's running in the CIM

[Ed. note: What a lie!]

Ira: Ba!
[Ed. note: We believe he's saying "ball."]

My mom: I came down with this terrible cold, but then your dad brought home some of that Airborne for me and now I feel much better.
[Ed. note: Airborne won't cure a cold! It might not even prevent you from getting one.]

Leon: Whoa! Is that a Ferrari? Ferraris are like the Ferraris of cars.
[Ed. note: Ding, ding, ding!]

Yawn. Well, I guess I better get some rest. I have to be out there early tomorrow to watch Leon run by in the CIM! I'll be the one holding up this sign.
